This is my grandfather on my father’s side. Last year I had the opportunity to photograph him at the farm he was born on 96 years prior. The camera I used was a Zeiss Ikon from 1937 that once belonged to my wife’s great uncle. After spending the day with my grandfather, hearing his stories, and photographing him within his element, I put in the back of my mind that I wanted to do a project entirely devoted to this type of interaction.
Now in the autumn of 2010, I have set aside the time to do this project. I’m calling it Intimate America and will spend two weeks on the road in the midwest documenting my experiences with people along the way.
I never had the opportunity to do this with my grandfather on my mother’s side…he passed away when I was 16. The same year I picked up a camera.

I, of course, am very emotionally involved in this, especially with my father being on the site. (and having you as the photographer!) I am totally thrilled, ecstatic, proud on the direction you are taking! I look forward to your entire trip!
Dad, thanks for all your support!
Holy smokes, you looks so much like your grandfather (and father, of course!). I really love this photo. What an amazing idea.
